Online Talks “Handball without Borders”

In January, the handball world will look to Egypt. For the first time since 2005 (Tunisia), the Men’s World Championship is back on the African continent. However, the continent has much more to offer when it comes to handball, such as the Play Handball (PH) project. And even though South Africa as well as Kenya, where PH is mainly active, are affected by Corona, the topic of handball is not forgotten here. Completely in the sense of distance regulations, PH’s work is also currently taking place digitally.

From 8th to 10th December the PlayHandball Online Talk – “Handball without Borders” will take place for the first time. In three rounds of talks over three days (each at 12 noon, German time), guests from Africa and Europe who are active and involved in handball will talk and exchange views, discuss and get ideas and pass on experiences. PlayHandball’s first Online Course offers opportunities for learning and interaction.

29 participants from four different African Countries enjoyed the presentations, the participative approach of this online training and the interaction with other coaches.

A powerful online programme combining life skills, sports and education during these uncertain times of the COVID-19 pandemic was conducted by PlayHandball South Africa and Kenya, with great support from ONE TEAM in Germany and PLAY HANDBALL Förderverein in Germany. 29 participants took part in the online training from four different countries – South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda and Zimbabwe. The training was held online on the 17th, 18th, 25th of September and 1st of October 2020. It was designed for teachers, community workers and coaches to create a platform of learning, support and knowledge exchange for all those who work in remote and disadvantaged areas with children. The aim of the training was to, “equip coaches with the skills to become change makers and responsible, active citizens in their communities by using handball as the tool for development”. (more…)

“I am, You are, We are South Africa!” – Ubomi Children Camp July 2019

“I am, You are, We are South Africa!” That was the theme for the 1^st Ubomi Wintercamp sponsored by the Cape Times Fresh Air Camp. Over 100 disadvantaged youth from different communities of the environments of Cape Town experienced activities around Art, Dance, Nature & Handball over the weekend of 26^th to 28^th of July at the Campsite in Simon’s Town.

The Cape Times Fresh Air Camp celebrated its 100 years anniversary and, for this reason, invited the children of Ubomi children houses to celebrate with them. Over 100 children and 25 facilitators were invited to spend a weekend at their campsite in Simon’s Town. For the 1^st Winter Camp initiated by Ubomi, the organisation invited its partner organisation to come on board with children of their programmes and with activities to collaborate and co-create together a unique and memorable experience for the children. Using Sport to raise awareness for Climate Change! The PLAY HANDBALL Supercup is unique in its kind and is the first Handball & Environmental Tournament Series in South Africa.

After two successful annual events in 2016 & 2017, with over a thousand children reached from both Cape Town and Johannesburg, PLAY HANDBALL ZA (PHZA), in partnership with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS), hosted the PLAY HANDBALL Supercup 2018 on the 20^th of October 2018 at the Sinaba Sports Stadium, Daveyton, Gauteng. Karibu Kenya! PLAY HANDBALL Supercup the first time in Kenya to educate trainers and hence children around environmental friendly behaviour and how to deal with the waste situation.

We use Handball as a tool to create learning experiences for the youth around important socio-political topics such as environmental awareness. With its flagship project the PLAY HANDBALL Supercup going in its third year in South Africa, the model was replicated in Kenya, making it the first country outside South Africa to organise and host such an event. Play Handball Kenyan office organised this first environmental handball programme in partnership with the Federal Republic of Germany Embassy in Nairobi and Konrad Adenauer Foundation Kenya in Kisumu, Western Kenya on the 13^th October, 2018.
