‘Lekker game, coach!’ – An unforgettable day of handball in Goedverwacht

“When are we going to play a lekker game of handball?” For the past three months, this was the enthusiastic question from children every Tuesday and Thursday during our afternoon handball lessons. Their dream of participating in a real tournament finally came true on the 14th of November, thanks to the dedication of Salome and Liv, PLAY HANDBALL volunteers with the “Piketberg Sports Development Foundation” in South Africa’s Bergrivier municipality. Together, they organised a memorable event in Salome’s host village of Goedverwacht. Here Salome and Liv share how the day unfolded.

The theme, “UMOJA NI NGUVU,” meaning “Stronger Together” in Swahili, resonated throughout the event.

Exciting Highlights from the PLAY HANDBALL Supercup in Nairobi

On August 17, 2024, the PLAY HANDBALL Kenya team hosted an incredible Supercup tournament at SOS School in Buruburu, Nairobi. This event brought together 200 enthusiastic participants representing 21 teams from various regions, including Thika, Juja, Machakos, Korogocho, and Buruburu. With the support of 35 leaders, including the talented Strathmore University professional handball team, the day was filled with energy, teamwork, and fun! (more…)

Our journey to Tanzania started at 5.00 am on the 5th of may when we travelled by bus from Nairobi, Kenya to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Apart from the usual challenges at the border, the very long bus journey went smoothly and we arrived in Dar es Salaam.

Handball is growing in Kisumu County – 17 teams at first county tournament in by EmpowerGirlsPlus

17 teams from Kisumu County and Siaya County participated in the first handball tournament hosted by our community partner EmpowerGirlsPlus (EGP) in Kisumu, western Kenya. It was an exciting day for the players and the host organisation. “This was the first time we organised a tournament for teams outside our community. We made it a one-day event since it was our very first one. Some of the things might have not happened as we expected, but all in all we feel grateful and happy”, tells Ruth Moody – Director of EmpowerGirlsPlus. 300 participants attended the tournament, including relatives of the players. Four school teams and three community teams, which are part of EmpowerGirlsPlus’ sports activities in the community of Kisumu, competed in the tournament. (more…)

Take action for the future – the 4th SuperCup in Cape Town inspires 150 kids to take action for climate change

PLAY HANDBALL ZA (PHZA) inspired over 150 children at the 4th SuperCup to be fair on the field and beyond. 15 school and community teams from Cape Town all the way to Piketberg and Franschhoek took part in this educational tournament. Mr M. Hansen the German Consul in Cape Town, Mr R. Larney from the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and Mr A. Pole the President of the South African Handball Federation (SAHF) honoured the tournament with their presence and an opening speech.
