Piketberg is a farming community on the Cape-Namibia-Route. There are only limited activities for kids after school available. In January 2018 we introduced the first time handball at a children sports day to the community. The excitement for handball was spread. We decided with our partner the South African Youth Leaders Network (SAYLN) to assist the Piketberg Sport Development Foundation (PSD) in bringing in a new sport to the children of the community. Since February 2018 Marie went for 2 month to Piketberg and introduced the sport there to four farm and town schools. The final event for Marie was a Peace-Day-Tournament on the 21th of March. 40 kids competed not only in handball, they also learned in workshops facilitated by SAYLN and PSD about active citizenship and drug abuse. After this first steps, the PSD is planning to establish a league for handball in Piketberg and we are looking forward to support them with this vision. We already were able to help them a bit, and bought from private donations basic equipment for the community to keep on playing handball.
