Friday-for-Future in Europe –Using Sport to raise awareness for Climate Change in Cape Town! The PLAY HANDBALL Supercup is unique in its kind and is the first Handball & Environmental Tournament Series in South Africa. The aim is to ENHANCE ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AMONG OUR YOUTH. Since 2016 Play Handball has reached over 1400 youth.
On Saturday, 30th of November 2019, from 9am-5pm, PLAY HANDBALL ZA is hosting the 4th Annual PLAY HANDBALL SuperCup in Cape Town.
Approximately 20 teams from the West Coast; Cape Town’s surrounding areas (Langa, Lavender Hill, Ottery etc) all the way up to Cape Winelands (Franschhoek) have registered to be part of the SuperCup at the German International School in Tamboerskloof, Cape Town; the teams play mixed, boys and girls together, and the age group is between 10 – 14 years.
Besides raising awareness for environmental friendly behaviour, the aim of the SuperCup is to promote enjoyment of playing sports, inclusion and equality & diversity to contribute to building a peaceful, responsible and active society starting with the youth by using sport to enhance positive social behaviours. Our four core Fair Play Values for the Competition are: Enjoyment “Have fun and show compassion to others”, Equality & Diversity “Respect and honour others”, Inclusion “Show Team Spirit and be there for others”, Sustainability “Take responsible action for a better society”
The values are the heart of the whole competition and influence the interaction of players in the court and beyond. They define all rules and regulations, the formation of the teams, and the scoring system.
Since the first tournament in 2016, the SuperCup has evolved. In addition to the environmental game manual, which teaches teachers and trainers methods to impart environmental knowledge in a playful way to the youth, the Zero-Waste-Recycle-Station run by Waste-ED and the Eco-Education-Trail, the tournament will be complemented this year by a Fair Play Scoring System.
The tournament series started in 2016 with support from the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation (KAS), to raise awareness for climate change and support environmental education and cohesion through sport. Since then, PHZA has reached over 1400 young people between ages 10 to 16 years old in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Although this year’s tournament is without a main sponsor, PHZA has decided to go ahead hosting it. “It would be a shame not to host it, because the youth in our partner project has been training the whole year and are very excited about this established tournament. Therefore, we decided with the help of private donors through our fundraising channels to let it still happen. Unfortunately, we are not able to host the Supercup in Johannesburg too. But are planning for it toward next year again”, states Nicola Scholl (Director of PHZA).
HELPERS for the day wanted! Play Handball is still looking for volunteers to help coordinate teams, pack lunches, help out with the Eco-Education Trail and take on other tasks. If you are interested, please send an e-mail to projects@play-handball.org or write to us on Facebook @playhandballza.
The tournament is open to the public! Come by and watch Handball life. There is also a small kiosk with drinks and snacks. We are looking forward to good and exciting games, a day full of environmental awareness and lots of fun!
