Play Handball Volunteer Programme extends to Kenya. Volunteers go abroad, gain valuable intercultural experiences and help at the same time with handball in another country. After having facilitated workshops and the first Super Cup in Kenya last year, Play Handball is happy to welcome the first German Volunteers in Kenya from September 2019.

Play Handball has been supporting handball for development activities since 2017 in the East African Country. The organisation uses Handball as a tool to create learning experiences for the youth around important socio-political topics such as environmental awareness. In October 2018 the flagship project – the PLAY HANDBALL Super Cup – was replicated in Kenya, making it the first country outside South Africa to host such an event.

“We are so happy that we were able to strengthen our relationship with Youth Abroad in Kiel and finally manage to send volunteers to Kenya to support our partner projects in our country,” says George Nange (Country Manager of Play Handball in Kenya), expressing his delight at the extension of the Play Handball Volunteer Programme to Kenya.

Interview with Thabang Mphatoe from our partner orgaisation SCORE. He is working beside others as a handball coach at the Franschhoek Valley Community Sport Centre.

When and how did your relationship with Play Handball SA start?

I got to know Play Handball in 2017. We had a volunteer from Play Handball based at our community sport centre. In this year we went with our team as well to the Supercup in Cape Town. At the handball tournament we got lots of information about environmental awareness and as well learned new things about coaching. After he left, I took over as a coach and that where the relationship between me and Play Handball started. (more…)

Play Handball Supercup series in its third year – With Handball active for the sustainable development goal 13 “Climate Action” of the United Nations

Germany is co-organiser of the Handball World Championship in January. Two years later, in 2021, the World Championship will be hosted on the African continent. After 1999 in Egypt and 2005 in Tunisia, Egypt will host the World Cup for the second time.

The Play Handball Supercup series is still a long way from such a big tournament, but this year, there was a new pleasing development. In 2018, the tournament was played not only in South Africa but also for the first time in Kenya. The basic orientation has not changed. The Play Handball Supercup is and remains the first tournament series in Africa that combines sport with education and environmental protection. The motto is: More than handball! (more…)

Anja Althaus: I’ve known Nico for many years, as a fellow player and later also as an opponent. We played together in the youth national team and in Trier I played with her sister, Kathrin Scholl. So I know the whole family very well and both of us were always the crazy chickens in the youth team. At some point our handball ways have been separated, but I have always followed what Nico did.
