It started as a spark of an idea — a belief that sports could transform lives. This vision took root in Nkubu, Kenya, where PLAY HANDBALL recently wrapped up a vibrant three-month pilot project. From September to December 2024, this initiative brought together students, teachers, and the community, proving that handball is more than just a game; it’s a powerful tool for education, personal growth, and community development. The initiative, implemented in collaboration with the Rotary Club Nkubu and with the support of the Rotary Club Eschborn in Germany, aimed to evaluate the feasibility for a large handball project.

The Journey to the Pilot Project
The seeds for this project were planted when the Rotary Club Eschborn and Rotary Club Nkubu met in 2022 and envisioned a future where sports could be a cornerstone of youth development and education in Meru County in Kenya. Their vision found a partner in PLAY HANDBALL. Despite challenges like limited funding, the dream took shape in 2024 to run a pilot program in three schools: MCK Ntemwene Primary School, CCM Ntonyero Primary School, and Kigane Primary School. The pilot, designed to run from September to December 2024, focused on structured handball training, teacher workshops, and an inter-school tournament, all with a strong emphasis on teamwork, leadership, and life skills development.

Implementation Highlights – Moments That Made the Difference

Kick-off and Equipment Hand-over
September 10, 2024, the project officially began with the handover of sports equipment. It was a day of excitement as students and teachers gathered to receive new handball equipment, generously donated by the German Embassy in Nairobi, to the participating schools.

Teacher’s Workshop: Building Local Capacity
Six teachers, eager to learn, diving into the basics of handball coaching. Over two days, our PLAY HANDBALL instructor, Victor Siero, taught them not just the rules of the game but also how to inspire their students. By the end, these educators weren’t just teachers—they were coaches, ready to champion handball in their schools. Their feedback? “We want more!” Longer and advanced training is on the top of their wish list.

Student Training Sessions: Where Passion Took Flight
Twice a week, the courts at all three schools buzzed with energy as a total of 74 students (43 boys and 31 girls) worked on their their skills. Under the guidance of PLAY HANDBALL coach Newton Murimi Kiambati, they practised passing, shooting and defending. But it wasn’t just about the sport. These sessions became a classroom for life skills – teamwork, discipline and leadership flourished alongside their athletic skills. And for sure, they had a lot of fun and team spirit. 

Final Tournament: Showcasing Talent and Team Spirit
On December 15, 2024, the three schools came together for an inter-school tournament. The atmosphere was electric, with students showcasing not just their improved skills but also their sportsmanship and camaraderie. It was more than a competition; it was a celebration of their journey.

Achievements That Inspire

The pilot project successfully demonstrated the potential of sports-based programs to empower youth and build stronger school communities. Key achievements included:

For Students:
Participation in handball training had a big impact on the students. Their athletic skills improved: passing accuracy, dribbling, defense, and overall game understanding showed noticeable progress. Additionally, there were positive changes in life skills – increased self-confidence, discipline, teamwork, and leadership qualities were observed by both participants and teachers. Teachers also reported improved discipline, enhanced coordination, and a generally positive attitude among the children and youth.

For Teachers:
The teachers also benefited from the initiative. They enhanced their coaching skills, enabling them to sustain the program in the long term. Furthermore, the project contributed to creating a supportive environment where students could develop not only athletically but also personally and academically.

For Schools:
The project was well-received at the school level as well. The provision of sports equipment enriched not only physical education but also other school activities. Additionally, the handball training strengthened the sense of community within and between the schools.

Overcoming Challenges, Setting New Goals

Of course, no journey is without hurdles. Kigane Primary School’s temporary withdrawal due to exams, but joined back later. Teachers and schools also emphasized the need for improved sports facilities, additional equipment, and more intensive teacher training to maximize the program’s impact.

Looking Ahead

The success of this pilot is just the beginning. It has proven that handball can do more than develop athletes; it can shape confident, disciplined, and empowered individuals. 

The Meru pilot project has laid a solid foundation for the future. By demonstrating the effectiveness of handball as a tool for education and development, PLAY HANDBALL and its partners have inspired hope for a larger, long-term initiative. The next step is now to secure funding so that this project can be maintained and be established and run long-term.
