Nairobi, Kenya / Denmark – March 2025 – Exciting news from the PLAY HANDBALL family! We’re thrilled to announce our new partnership with Handball That Impact (HTI), a newly established Denmark-based NGO dedicated to using handball for social good. This collaboration is all about making handball more accessible, strengthening our programs, and creating even bigger opportunities for young players in Kenya.

A partnership built on growth and shared values

This partnership isn’t just about supporting PLAY HANDBALL Kenya (PHKE) – it’s about growing together! HTI was born from the vision of Lene Karsbæk and Søren Østergaard, who approached Nicola Scholl in 2024 with a strong desire to support handball development in Kenya. Through discussions, it became clear that the best way to make a real impact was to establish HTI as an independent organization while working closely with PLAY HANDBALL.

By collaborating, we ensure long-term sustainability, allowing both PHKE and HTI to grow while maximizing handball’s impact in Kenya. PLAY HANDBALL has inspired HTI’s journey and will continue to provide guidance and mentorship as they develop into a strong partner in the handball-for-development space.

A shared passion for handball and social impact

At PLAY HANDBALL (PH), we’ve always believed in the power of sport to educate, empower, and bring people together. That’s exactly why teaming up with HTI is such a perfect fit! With their support, we’re stepping up our efforts to develop handball in Kenya, focusing on our community centers in Buruburu and Machakos.

This partnership will help us grow our grassroots initiatives through fundraising, capacity-building, and program development. HTI shares our vision and will work alongside us to ensure our handball programs continue to make a real difference in young people’s lives.

Supporting coaches to expand our programs

One of the first things we’re doing together is strengthening our coaching teams to grow handball in our communities. We’re excited to have two dedicated young coaches leading the way: Brian Kithinji and Newton Murimi Kiambati.

Brian has been part of PLAY HANDBALL since 2019, bringing his experience as a former national team player and a deep passion for the game. Newton, an educator and community leader, is all about using sport as a tool for youth development and social change. Both will work closely with our national coordinators, Carola and Victor, to create more opportunities for kids to play, learn, and grow through handball.

What’s next? Exciting exchange programs!

We’re not stopping at coaching and community programs. We’re also planning an international exchange program between Kenya and Denmark! Starting in 2026, we’ll be launching a boarding school exchange program, giving young athletes the chance to experience different cultures while developing their handball skills.

Moving forward together

This is just the beginning of what we know will be a strong and meaningful partnership. As PH and HTI embark on this exciting journey, we’re focused on sustainable program development, empowering local coaches, and fostering an international network of support for handball’s growth in Kenya.

With HTI’s support, we’re excited to take PLAY HANDBALL Kenya to the next level: expanding our reach, improving our programs, and continuing to empower and connect young people through handball.

We can’t wait to see what the future holds!
