Last Saturday, 29 March, the first handball tournament took place in Buruburu. The plan was made in February during the interim seminar of our weltwärts volunteers, Ella and Cecilia organised a great tournament. Boys and girls teams from 5 schools from Buruburu, Korogsho and also a team from Machakos took part in the tournament. A total of 49 girls and 57 boys gave their all for their school team. The  U15-players proved once again the power of sport.

Even though all participants (f/m/d) went home as winners, one school came out on top. In both the girls‘ and boys’ categories, the teams from “Kids Beyond Limit” in Korogocho came out on top of all the other teams and won the tournament. Second place went to the girls from DMI and the boys from Rockfield School. The other teams from St Jude, Githunguri and our team from Machakos did not go away empty-handed either, as everyone took home a medal, experience and pride.

It was a great honour to receive a visit from the Ministry of Education, who praised the event for its inclusive approach to sport. It is the mission of the Ministry of Education and part of the new Kenyan curriculum to increasingly involve and promote children and young people in activities such as sport. A development that we are very happy about.

Through ongoing sports programmes in schools and communities and through tournaments like these, we want to provide opportunities and prospects for local youth. Seeing these young athletes grow through sport is exactly why we do what we do!

Well done to our great team – Ella, Cecilia, Victor, Brian and Carol – who made this tournament a success! A big thank you also goes to the 15 volunteers on site who made sure everything ran smoothly.
