On August 17, 2024, the PLAY HANDBALL Kenya team hosted an incredible Supercup tournament at SOS School in Buruburu, Nairobi. This event brought together 200 enthusiastic participants representing 21 teams from various regions, including Thika, Juja, Machakos, Korogocho, and Buruburu. With the support of 35 leaders, including the talented Strathmore University professional handball team, the day was filled with energy, teamwork, and fun!
The young athletes played handball while developing valuable sporting and social skills. This year’s tournament motto was “DON’T LITTER OUR COUNTRY,” emphasizing the importance of environmental responsibility. Organized by PLAY HANDBALL Kenya and run entirely by youth leaders, young coaches, volunteers, and team captains, the event aimed to enhance learning, build self-confidence, and improve coordination skills.
A Day Full of Learning and Fun!
The Supercup was held at SOS School, where young people aged 10 to 17 from various youth organizations joined forces for a fantastic experience. Participants played in 9 under-12 teams and 12 under-15 teams, combining competitive spirit with life skills and environmental education. After their matches, players had the option to visit life skill or environmental desks, where they learned about mental health issues and waste management.
The younger children under 12 also had a blast, playing traditional Kenyan games like “Kati” alongside handball.
A Life-Changing Experience!
The impact of the PLAY HANDBALL Supercup went beyond just sports. Many participants shared that it was their first time receiving a medal, a moment they will cherish forever. This experience highlighted how sports can bring joy and create lasting memories.
PLAY HANDBALL Kenya is dedicated to empowering youth through sports, arts, and culture. We look forward to continuing this annual event and are deeply grateful to the Thomas-and-Jutta-Kastner-Foundation and the PLAY HANDBALL Förderverein Germany for their invaluable support. Together, we’re creating a promising future for young people in Kenya!
